2022 Australian Braford Society President Report

The Annual General Meeting saw the end of my first term as President of the Australian Braford Society, and what a 12 months it has been. The Braford breed has been going from strength to strength, the Widebay Burnett Promotional Group hosted their annual Elite Braford Breeders’ Sale which saw an increase average of $593 for the commercial heifers and an $862 increase for the registered heifers. 100% clearance of these heifers went into Braford and commercial breeder herds. Thanks again to the Widebay Group for getting this sale up and running.

Biggenden Livestock held two sales for the first time this year with Braford classes well supported with Brian & Trinket Anderson and the Kenny Family from Harriett Valley Brafords taking the top prizes at these sales. Congratulations to them and thank you to those who supported these commercial sales. The New Dimension Sale held in Bell by the South Queensland Group was again a credit to those involved with the organising and vendors who sold there. Congratulations to the Amor family from Carinya Brafords for top price bull and the McNamara family from MCN Brafords on the top price heifer.

The National Sale this year showed the strength of our breed with a $15,611 average for the bulls and a clearance of 96%. Top price of $48,000 was achieved four times by the Carinya and Ascot Neimen Studs and the Marks family from Winvic Brafords took top price heifer. Congratulations to the vendors who supported this Sale. Thanks also to Sale Chairman Russell Kenny and his wife Donna, and all the Sale Committee for organising the sale once again – it takes a lot of work to get a sale this size together.

Our breed was well promoted this year with our Feature Show at the St George Show which was organised by the South Queensland Group. This was well supported and the standard of cattle were a credit to the studs showing. Thanks to the South Queensland Group again for organising their stand at Farmfest where Brafords shone through with Sunny Lawn Stud taking out top honours with their cow and calf.

The stand at Ag-Grow in Emerald was very well supported again this year by Rhonda Ryan, Banyula Brafords, and the Moeger family from Triple S Brafords. It was promising to see the Capricorn Group being reformed after a meeting held at Ag-Grow which will be beneficial in promoting Brafords in the Central Queensland region. Thanks to the NSW Branch for supporting Primex at Gunnedah by all accounts it was well-represented and attracted a lot of interest.

It’s pleasing to see that we will have a full board on the Braford Council again, it is great to see such enthusiasm and passion for the breed. I would like to thank those on the Board, and the Members of the NSW Branch Committee for your help and dedication to the breed this past year. I am pleased to announce that the Australian Braford Society will be joining Breedplan, while not a requirement of being a member it is encouraged as the Society is looking to help subsidise membership of Breedplan to help get started. More details will be available soon. Sire tracing has now been mandated for the year 2025 meaning all registered animals sold as registered animals at auction must be sire verified. The by-laws will be changing and an updated copy will be available as soon as this is done. This is our eleventh full year with ABRI, and it has shown a substantial saving which has allowed us to invest into other areas of our breed for the future.

Congratulations to those studs who reached the 50 year milestone and also to our patron Larry Acton on receiving life membership.

I believe the future for Brafords is bright and I look forward to what the next 12 months have to offer. Thanks to everyone for your support.

Stuart Dingle, President Australian Braford Society

ACM SIRE SHOOTOUT WINNER – SUNNY LAWN FELIX 1473 (P)

Sunny Lawn Braford stud of Clifton, Queensland has taken out the 2022 ACM Sire Shootout. Neil Pacholke and Leanne Ridley were excited and shocked by the win. They believe that Sunny Lawn Felix 1473 (P) is an outstanding 22-month-old Braford bull but never thought he could take out the top title with 53 bulls entered from across Australia.

The competition is an online opportunity to promote stud’s top bulls that are for sale during 2022. It is judged over three sections – Bos Indicus, British and European breeds by three judges. The top five placegetters from each section are then judged by the three individual judges in the Interbreed final. This year saw the Braford bull from Sunny Lawn come out on top, as the only bull to earn points from each judge.

Sunny Lawn Felix 1473 (P) born 29 August 2020 is a homozygous poll son of Donrinda K026 Kentucky who has bred well in the Sunny Lawn herd. Felix has that extra muscle expression, length, balance, structural correctness and sire appeal that has earned him attention not only throughout the Braford breed but also by cattle breeders in general.

Felix 1473 was Junior Champion at the St George Braford Feature Show held in May, and was also a part of the winning pair of bulls. He was joined by Sunny Lawn Dresden 1484 (P), who was Junior and Grand Champion Female of the feature show at 17 months, and Sunny Lawn Dresden 1449 (P) who was Reserve Senior Champion Female to win the Breeders Group. Dresden 1449 (P) then went on to win the Supreme Exhibit at FarmFest 2022 held at Toowoomba.

Sunny Lawn bulls will be sold at the two upcoming Braford sales. They have two bulls and two females for the New Dimension Braford Sale held in Bell on 28 August 2022. For the National Braford Sale held in Rockhampton on 12 September Sunny Lawn has 10 high-quality bulls for sale. Sunny Lawn Felix 1473 (P) is Lot 166 at the National Braford Sale.

“We were excited by the win and truly humbled to see years of breeding being recognised”.

Neil Pacholke and Leanne Ridley of Sunny Lawn Brafords, Clifton QLD, were thrilled to be awarded the Supreme Exhibit at this year’s FarmFest competition.

Sunny Lawn Dresden 1449 along with her heifer calf, Sunny Lawn Dresden 1522 were on display at the Braford site over the three days of FarmFest and was entered in the Fantastic Female Competition on the Thursday of the field days.

She was successful in winning the Senior Tropical Female section, then went on to be awarded the Fantastic Female of FarmFest.

She then went out for the Supreme Exhibit award, against the Champion Battle of the Bulls winner, an angus bull exhibited by K5X Angus, Steve Hayward and Kelllie Smith of Allora Qld.
Judge Hillary O’Leary spoke positively of both exhibits, and in the end our Braford cow and calf unit was awarded the Supreme title due her structural correctness, length, depth and beautiful udder on the cow. He stated that her calf was outstanding.

Dresden 1449 is 30 months and her calf, 5 months old, have been successful previously with Senior Champion Braford Female at Pittsworth show. At the Braford feature show held at St George at the start of May, she was Reserve Senior Champion Female and apart of the Pair of Females and Breeders group winning teams for Sunny Lawn.

Females like this do not come along regularly, with such an amazing udder and structure with femineity. Her calf is a true credit to her.

We are so proud of this win and thank all the sponsors and organisers of the competitions at FarmFest 2022.

Femininity, Fertility and Braford Futurity was the mission of the day

Peter Dingle from Mount Perry officially declared the 2nd Elite Braford Breeders Sale Day open. Once again it was a fabulous day in many ways: Great community promotion for Gayndah to host a cattle sale with cattle bidding from as far away as the Emerald, Rockhampton, Warwick and Casino NSW.
“This year’s sale results were better than last years with an increase in average price per head and the overall quality of the line-up of PTIC, registered and commercial heifers was very good. This is what every beef seed stock producer strives for and this was reflected by a $2,250 increase in the top price from last year and an overall increase in heifer sale average price by $703. The top priced registered and commercial heifers were sold by Harriett Valley Brafords, Russell, Donna, Bec, Jeff and Dan Kenny from Gayndah. The top priced registered Heifer, Harriett Valley Victoria (p) sold for $8,000 to Jason Phillips Toowoomba. The top priced Commercial heifer, Harriett Valley 83 (p) sold for $7,000 to Larry and Beth Acton, Riverton Gracemere.

“It is always wonderful to see so many of the next generation little cattle kids at the sale too. They are our future for sustainable agricultural and forestry production. On that note I would like to thank Agforce QLD for sponsoring a fabulous morning tea provided by Down Right Delicious Catering and for the Gayndah State School for cooking up a great BBQ lunch for all the vendors. The whole community benefits from events like this.”

Congratulations to all the Vendors: Stuart and Janelle Dingle, Chase water Mt Perry; Art and Ness Bambling, Penwhaupell Gayndah; Jill and Dan Galloway, Ascot Neimen Brafords Banana; Mal and Sandra Kenny and Boys, Abernethy Brafords Gayndah; Russell, Donna, Bec, Jeff and Dan Kenny, Harriett Valley Brafords Gayndah; Julianne Munn and Glen Hanson, Dark Patches Glastonbury; Peter Parnell, Coograli Brafords, Maleny and the Webster Family, Goomora Brafords Gympie.

Thank you to our all our sponsors and guest sponsor Wendy Pfeffer from Rabobank and Adrianna Potts from Virbac Mundubbera were also in attendance. Many thanks to the Jordan family from Norco with sponsorship and a great price for the new selling ring and for the Dingle family for supplying labour and equipment.

Congratulations to Greg, Lyn, Lee and Shelly Webster from Goomboorian, Gympie on celebrating 3 generations of Websters, 50 years to Goomora Braford Stud breeding. Thank you to Jill Galloway who presented a beautiful award, accepted on behalf of the family by Greg. Last year the Webster family had a personal best selling Goomora Falcon for $30,000 at the National Sale to the Comerford Brothers, Turrawulla Nebo. Best wishes in your future endeavours from the Australian Braford Society family.

2021 saw us sell our first bull at the New Dimension Sale held at the Bell showgrounds. Our bull, Alderside JJ after a successful show career, headed to Bell for the annual sale hosted by the South Queensland Braford Promotion Group. With a strong market, we were excited to be invited to be a first time vendor at the sale. The New Dimension Sale is a favourite event of ours each year on the calendar and is a credit to the group that organise it. The volunteers that work tirelessly behind the scenes before the sale do an amazing job and the sale ran seamlessly. Our bull JJ hit the scales on Friday at 929kg and had IMF 5.5 and EMA of 134 making him one of the top scanning bulls at the sale.

Friday night, we had an entertaining evening, having dinner and a few beers with everyone, and enjoyed some live music and an auction to raise money. Everyone had a great night and set the feeling for an enjoyable day ahead.

Well the butterflies hit Saturday, as we put the finishing touches on our bull and made sure he was clean and ready for the sale ring. With the pre-sale breakfast and formalities done it was down to business with the crew from Elders looking after our Bull Sale.

After a quick but intense bidding session, we were over the moon to have Alderside JJ purchased by Andrew and Wendy Whittaker, from Warwick, where he will be used as a stud sire for $12,000. We also made a purchase with another quality Strathgyle heifer heading home to our stud.
